The best beaches of Fuerteventura

In the eyes of a local.

They say that you never finish discovering your land completely, but having lived in Fuerteventura all our lives, we feel that each of its beaches tells a little piece of our own history.

The coast of Fuerteventura offers infinite corners for all tastes: from stretches of fine sand that seem to merge with the horizon, to secluded coves where you feel like you are in the middle of paradise.

This island has an endless list of beautiful beaches, but we share with you a personal selection of top beaches in Fuerteventura that we consider essential, not only for their natural beauty, but also for their ability to create moments that stand the test of time. Every year, several beaches in the island finish among the best in Spain in the annual TravelersChoice ranking.

Playa de Cofete

Cofete is one of those beaches that take your breath away. Located in the south of the island, in the heart of the Jandía Natural Park, getting there involves driving along an unpaved road that, although it may seem long, is worth every minute of the journey.

There, the immensity of the Atlantic meets the grandeur of the Jandía mountains, creating a picture that looks like something out of a film, when in fact many films are taken from here. Cofete offers hardly any services beyond a restaurant, so it is important to bring supplies and to protect yourself from the sun. However, the feeling of solitude and absolute freedom is something you will never forget. On this beach you won’t find it hard to connect with yourself.

Grandes Playas Corralejo

When I think about Fuerteventura best beaches, I think about Corralejo, I think of huge golden dunes caressed by the wind, right next to a turquoise sea that invites you to dive in. These beaches, located within the Natural Park of Corralejo Dunes, are very well communicated and have multiple services nearby: hotels, restaurants and leisure areas for those looking for a more complete plan.

They are perfect if you enjoy long walks along the shore, water sports such as paddle surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing, or simply like to lie on the sand and let the sound of the sea relax your senses.

Sotavento

Sotavento is famous all over the world for its shallow waters and its incredible natural pools that form at low tide. It is located on the Jandía peninsula and is a key spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing enthusiasts, thanks to the constant winds blowing in from the Atlantic, which host the annual Sotavento Grand Slam Windsurfing World Championships.

Nearby there are water sports schools, a beach bar and a free car park, making it ideal not only for the more sporty, but also for those who want to spend the day in some comfort or with children, thanks to its natural lagoon in which there is no current, making this one of the best beaches of Fuerteventura.

Playa del Castillo

This is one of Fuerteventura’s best windless beaches and is almost like a little family retreat. Located in the town of Caleta de Fuste, it is sheltered from the waves by a natural bay, which makes it a great place for swimming or snorkelling.

There is also a wide range of hotels, restaurants, shops, a water sports centre and a starting point for some of the best excursions on the island, so it’s very convenient if you want a carefree holiday. Personally, I find it a simple but charming beach, ideal for those who are looking for peace and quiet and services close at hand.

Playa del Águila or La Escalera (staircase)

Located in the northwest, a couple of kilometres south of El Cotillo, this wild beach is perfect for unwinding and recharging your batteries. As you descend the stone steps leading down to the beach, the view is simply spectacular: a long stretch of clear sand and deep blue waters that break hard on the shore. The beach is not overcrowded and, although it has no services, its charm lies precisely in its unspoilt and peaceful atmosphere.

The beach is perfect for the more playful on the shore thanks to its large waves, but you must be careful with the currents and not go too far from the shore. The sunsets on this beach are magnificent and it remains our favourite beach since we discovered it as children. We can’t stop recommending it since they improved the safety of the access stairs.
For us, this the nicest beach in fuerteventura.

La Concha (El Cotillo)

If we talk about the best beaches in fuerteventura, this one could not be missed, without a doubt
El Cotillo is a fishing village with a long tradition, and its La Concha beach is a real gem. With crystal-clear, calm waters, it is perfect for those who enjoy swimming without a hitch.

It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Fuerteventura and has a family atmosphere and several restaurants nearby where you can enjoy fresh fish and typical food. If you like to sit and watch the sunset, you will see how the sky is tinged with golden tones that turn the beach into a living painting where young and old can enjoy the good temperatures that Fuerteventura enjoys all year round.

Playa del Puertito (in Lobos Island)

Just a short boat ride from Corralejo, the Islote de Lobos is a small natural paradise.
Playa del Puertito, in particular, has a unique charm with its crystal clear waters in shades of green and blue, almost like a gigantic natural swimming pool.

There are not many services beyond a cosy restaurant on the island, but that is precisely what keeps the islet with its unspoilt essence. If you fancy an excursion with a difference, there’s nothing like spending the day on Lobos and feeling away from the hustle and bustle. Don’t forget your snorkel equipment to look underwater, as the area offers a colourful underwater life.

Playa del Matorral

El Matorral is an extensive strip of fine sand that stretches along the coast of Morro Jable, in the south of the island. It has a relaxed atmosphere, with a very pleasant promenade and plenty of amenities within walking distance: from shops, restaurants and cafes, to areas where you can practice sports such as paddle surfing.

It’s also a great place to enjoy the views of the iconic Morro Jable lighthouse, which adds a seaside touch to the landscape. The only downside is the nearby car park, which can sometimes be a bit tricky to find a parking space.

Playa del Pozo or Playa Chica

Although Puerto del Rosario is not particularly famous for its beaches, Playa Chica (also known as Playa del Pozo or Well’s Beach in english) is one of those pleasant surprises in the capital. Being small and sheltered, it’s perfect for a quick swim without having to leave the city.

It also has services nearby, such as cafés and restaurants, and a more urban atmosphere than other beaches on the island. For those who live here all year round, this little gem has become an ideal spot to unwind without going too far.

This beach connects to the avenue and promenade that leads to Playa Blanca, making it a very attractive area for a walk. The sunrises here are some of the best we’ve seen and it also offers a spectacular view of the cruise ships coming and going. In fact, if you’re coming on a cruise, I’m sure a swim at this beach will do you a world of good!

In short, these beaches are part of our daily lives and our memories. Each one has its own charm, with landscapes and services for different types of visitors. Fuerteventura is much more than sun and sand: it is the magic of the wind, the flavour of the sea and the warmth of its people. And I am convinced that, whatever your choice, you will take a little piece of this paradise with you. Enjoy it!
