WEATHER ALERT IN FUERTEVENTURA

Strong winds and coastal phenomena from 3 April onwards

The Town Hall of Puerto del Rosario has declared a weather alert situation in view of the forecast issued by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and the General Directorate of Emergencies of the Canary Islands Government, which anticipates strong winds and coastal phenomena from 00:00 hours today, Thursday 3 April 2025.

Other municipalities on the island of Majorca have also issued their corresponding communiqués alerting the population.

The areas affected will be mainly the interior of Fuerteventura, where wind gusts of up to 70 km/h are expected, as well as the western coasts, where winds will reach up to 61 km/h (force 7) with strong waves that could endanger bathers and small boats.

The alert situation implies a significant risk for daily activities, so it is crucial to take extra precautions during the coming days.

The school day has not been cancelled at this time. We will update the information if there are any changes.

Preventive measures taken:

  • All organised outdoor activities, both public and private, are suspended.
  • Activities such as hiking, sporting events, school trips, etc. are prohibited.
  • Signage will be reinforced in areas susceptible to landslides.
  • Control at accesses to promenades, beaches, breakwaters, jetties to avoid accidents.

The municipality has issued a series of recommendations to the population.

  • Avoid unnecessary travel and postpone any activity that requires going outdoors.
  • Use public transport whenever possible.
  • Use extreme caution when driving, especially on roads near the coast or in open and windy areas.
  • Keep doors and windows closed, securing objects likely to be moved or knocked over by the wind, such as flower pots, garden furniture or decorative items.
  • Avoid approaching the coast, wooded areas or areas with potentially unstable structures, such as cranes, billboards or electric poles.
  • Reserve the use of the telephone exclusively for emergencies, thus facilitating the communication of incidents and urgent situations to the competent authorities.

The Town Hall of Puerto del Rosario, like other municipalities, has activated all the necessary security and emergency services to reduce the risks and will continuously monitor the weather situation in detail.

They are also urging residents to cooperate as much as possible with official indications and to pay constant attention to official channels to keep informed about future updates and possible changes in the situation.

The official statement also stresses that “the safety of our neighbours is our priority. We ask for maximum collaboration and attention to official channels for future updates”.
